It scratched so many itches! I loved the focus on the benefits of knitting, the research behind it, the integration of therapeutic interventions into the practice of self-care, and the practical examples of how to integrate mindfulness into our self-care practices.

It felt like going to a therapy session in the best way – learning new ideas and tools, and helping me to be more mindful and thoughtful about my making.

Motherhood has been a hard transition for me. Session 3 made me realise that I still need projects to help me lean into that part of my identity, and I’m looking forward to exploring that more.

I loved the opportunity to pause and really think about what the practice of knitting means in my life. It has inspired me to rein in my frenetic batch of WIPs so that I can work through them with clearer intent.

I enjoyed listening to Dr. Mia and Dr. Paula speak to each other, I felt there was a great collaborative spirit and chemistry between the two.

It’s given me a new lens to look at my knitting. It can be easy to get caught up in the “productivity”, feeling like you aren’t making as much progress as you want. But the course has helped me take a step back and remember why I value knitting so much and why it became such a cornerstone of my life.

Session 4 was eye-opening. I’m naturally drawn to setting goals, but I’ve struggled with actually following through. I can see now that it’s because those goals weren’t really aligned with my core values. I love the idea of using this framework, especially as I’m feeling quite burned out, and living according to my values feels more manageable and life-giving than chasing arbitrary goals.

About us

We are two Clinical Psychologists passionate about knitting and sharing our expertise in the psychological science of wellbeing.

“I am a Clinical Psychologist specialising in the prevention of work-related burnout and vicarious trauma. I also host the ‘When Work Hurts’ podcast.

The golden threads running through my work are Connection, Compassion and Creativity. I’m so excited to be bringing these together, along with Mia’s knitting wisdom, for this course.

Current knitting project: I’m currently obsessed with knitting and crocheting brightly coloured dish cloths – quick, satisfying and they brighten up my household chores!

“I am a Clinical Psychologist specialising in using knitting for its therapeutic benefits.  Alongside my private practise with children and families, I run therapeutic knitting groups which focus on helping people to use craft regularly as part of their self-care.  I also host the ‘Why I Knit’ podcast where I interview knitters about how knitting benefits their mental health.

I am really excited to be joining Paula to offer you the chance to protect some time for yourself and to help you to intentionally use knitting as part of your self-care on an ongoing basis.

Current knitting project(s):  I firmly believe in having more than one on the go!  At the moment I am making asuper bright chunky cardigan and a colour-work Spot sweater using lots of lovely yarn scraps.”

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a private podcast work?

When you purchase the podcast you will be emailed a personal podcast link. You can copy this into your favourite podcast app, or bookmark the link and access the course directly from that.

Unfortunately Spotify does not currently support private podcasts, but all other apps we know of do.

Will the course teach me to knit?

No, the course does not cover learning to knit from scratch. However, if you’ve never knitted before you can download our great free resource on how to get started.

My knitting is very rusty - will I still benefit from the course?

Yes! As long as you know the basics, even if you are rusty, everything in the course will still apply to you. Our focus is much more on the process of knitting than on the outcome. If you want a refresh of the basics check out our free guide for new knitters.

How long will the course take?

We have designed the course to be self-paced so that you can work through it as fast or as slowly as you want to.

When you sign up you will get immediate access to all the sessions. However we will send a prompt email every other day with the session notes and materials in sequence to help keep you on track. We think doing a session every other day will be a good pace, as it will allow you time to implement the ideas in between. If you do the course at this pace it will take you 20 days (not including the bonus material as these may not all be relevant to you).

How long will I have access to the course?

You will have access to the course for the lifetime of the course – as long as it is available.

Is the course like therapy?

Although we are drawing on therapeutic models and tools the course is designed for educational purposes and is not a substitute for personalised professional mental health support. If you are concerned about your mental health please speak to your GP or a registered mental health professional.
